Propane consumers are getting burned in the wallet when buying exchange cylinders for their backyard BBQ. When oil and steel prices soared in 2008, many major propane suppliers of exchange cylinder programs quietly reduced the amount of gas pumped into each 20-pound tank.
Since then, propane prices have been cut in half as the price of oil has dropped. But smaller refills are still being sold nationwide by many dealers, and most buyers are unaware because the tank is the same size.
If you read the fine print, you will notice that the tank is filled only to 15, 16 or 17 pounds instead of the 20 pounds the cylinder is designed to hold. Unfortunately, the price that these programs charge doesn't necessarily reflect the reduced product inside.
For the past year, tank exchanges can cost anywhere from $20-30. Consumers who choose to refill their tanks at one of our dispensing locations only pay $15-$20. If an average customer goes through just 4 tanks worth per summer, the savings of using a refilling station are clearly worth it. With an additional 1.19 gallons in a refilled tank, you get 4 tanks worth, where the same amount of fuel would require using 5 exchange cylinders.
