Osterman Propane Fuels Prototype Low Energy Home

Propane provider for a new neighborhood in Montville, CT. This development is unique because every home will be low energy. In fact, the first home is expected to qualify for the National Association of Home Builders ultra-green Emerald standard for green building. Incorporating numerous green and energy efficient features, these homes are at least 60% more efficient than a typical new construction home.

The home uses energy saving features including super insulation (R-60 roof, R-40 walls and an R-20 basement), high performance doors and windows (low-E, Krypton-gas-filled, triple-glazed windows), energy star certified appliances, and of course high efficiency propane fueled heating and hot water equipment. The home uses a Rinnai on-demand hot water heater (www.rinnai.us) which is located next to the kitchen in the powder room and right below the upstairs baths so less heat is lost as the water goes through the pipes. The home also has a 95% efficient gas furnace which is tied to a high efficiency air-source heat pump. The furnace works with the heat pump providing backup heat during cold winter days. Finally, the home also features the new Empire Mantis fireplace which operates at 93% efficiency (www.empirecomfort.com). In fact, this home is so well insulated it could be heated by the fireplace all by itself!

Osterman Propane donated labor, materials, and equipment for this build as it is also the House of the Year for the Builders Association of Eastern Connecticut. Proceeds from the sale of this home will go towards supporting the association and their efforts.
